Paths & Trails: Exploring the Surrounding Area

Cook County is home to over 70,000 acres of some of the most wild and well-known forest preserves in Illinois. Home to prairies, woodlands, wetlands, savannas, native plants, wildlife, and more than a hundred threatened or endangered species, there’s a little something for everyone. Individuals of all ages can relax, get active, and enjoy the miles of paved and gravel trails and walking paths surrounding Rolling Meadows and our neighboring towns. Check out a few of our favorite local paths and trails:


Rolling Meadows Bike Trail System - Paved

Rolling Meadows offers miles of biking paths that run parallel to Salt Creek, from Euclid to Algonquin Road. Explore our community by foot or bike through Kimball Hill Park, Florey Park, Waverly Park, North and South Salk Park. Link up to Schaumburg, Arlington Heights, and Palatine trails to explore our neighboring communities.


Twin Lakes Recreation Area - Paved

Enjoy a short loop around the Twin Lakes in Palatine with recreational activities for people of all ages. This is the perfect place to take your family for the day!


Sunset Meadows Park - Paved

This ~1 mile walking path loops around the driving range, soccer fields, and playground at Sunset Meadows.


Busse Woods Trail, Ned Brown Forest Preserve: 12.9 Miles - Paved

The 3,558-acre Forest Preserve is one of the largest and most diverse natural areas in Illinois. Home to upland forests, fishing and boating sites, picnic areas, Elk pasture, and miles of paved trails, it’s like a mini getaway right in our own backyard!


Paul Douglas Trail, 7.2 Miles - Paved

This trail is the perfect loop for walking and cycling. With over 1,800 acres of open grasslands, restored wetlands and a heron rookery, the Paul Douglas loop is a great option for those who love birding or enjoying a stroll around acres of beautiful scenery.


Des Plaines River Trail: 56.3 Miles - Gravel

If you’re an endurance junkie, or love a grand adventure, the Des Plaines River Trail may be on your next weekend plan! This “little bit of everything” gravel trail runs down along the river, through 12 forest preserves, wildlife habitats, prairies, and more. Many preserves along the Des Plaines River Trail and Greenway provide trail access and parking.
